The CPS is constantly in the news. We bring hundreds of thousands of criminal cases to court each year in England and Wales, and are leaders in developing the criminal justice approach to the most difficult and sensitive cases.

We are looking for an ambitious and talented Senior Press Officer to join our friendly, supportive and expanding team dealing with all national media issues. You will be confident talking to journalists and senior lawyers alike, and have the ability to understand and translate complex issues quickly and accurately.

You will be enthusiastic and creative as we drive forward our digital communications and campaigning capability alongside our proactive and reactive media work. The successful candidate will be well versed in planning and producing content for digital channels and will be expected to play a leading role within the Press Office on this aspect of our work. You’ll also be familiar with evaluation techniques to ensure our communications are as effective as possible.

Your news judgement will be second to none and you will be able to anticipate and handle negative press stories at short notice. You will also be expected to use this judgement in order to regularly source and deliver positive proactive stories from within the CPS.

The job is demanding but extremely rewarding with every case bringing different challenges and every policy development different opportunities to promote the CPS.

The CPS is at the heart of the Criminal Justice System and its dynamic HQ press office provides a 24-hour, 365-days-a-year service to the media.  We deal with everything from terrorism, serious sex offences, electoral fraud, hate crime and murder to corporate manslaughter, extradition, arms smuggling, deaths in custody, tax evasion and much, much more.

You will line manage a small team of professionals, and you will liaise closely with the relevant police services or other investigators as well as other government departments including the Attorney General’s Office, Home Office and the Ministry of Justice. You’ll also offer your expert advice on media handling to senior CPS staff including those at the highest levels of the organisation.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in an out-of-hours duty rota, for which an allowance and overtime are paid.
